Santa’s grotto

By now, your loved ones should be finishing their Christmas lists, ready to post to the North Pole. Save yourself a stamp and hand-deliver those lists in person to the big man himself.

Santa has a lot on his plate, however, he’s super organised so you’ll be able to catch up with him in a number of locations across the city. Londonist has compiled a list of spots that’ll make tracking him down that little easier.

Some venues need you to book in advance, so it’s best to keep an eye out for availability (after all, Santa’s a busy guy).

Skate at Somerset House

It wouldn’t be Christmas without testing your skills on the ice so get gliding on one of London’s most beautiful outdoor ice rinks at Somerset House.

Celebrating its 20th year, it’s pretty much open all day and well into the evening – there’s even a late-night ice skating session with music by DJs.

New to the ice? Learn to skate at the Skate School and let the little ones have a go on the ice at the Polar Bear Club.

After you're all skated out, shop for gifts and festive goodies at Fortnum's Christmas arcade, and warm up with wintry food and drinks in Fortnum's Lodge, home to the Baileys Treat Bar. They serve up indulgent Baileys cocktails and hot drinks - yum. Find out more about skating at Somerset House.

It's one of the best Christmas experiences going. Oh no it isn't. Oh yes it is!

Pantomimes are great for all ages, with plenty of fun for the kids and tongue-in-cheek jokes for the adults.

You know it's Christmas when you see your favourite celebrities in over-the-top costumes on stage. They'll be singing and dancing - and encouraging you to do the same. Join in the fun and you'll be having a great time with the rest of the audience. These shows offer the theatre experience with plenty of laughs and cheers, often at a lower ticket price of many traditional West End shows or musicals.

Green Christmas displays at Carnaby Street

Carnaby is the heart of culture and lifestyle in London’s West End. It’s generally considered less commercial than other parts of the capital, so it’s a fantastic place to visit during the lead up to Christmas.

This year, Carnaby has collaborated with ocean conservation charity Project 0 to create a sustainable Christmas light display. Taking its cue from the sea: expect dazzling underwater scenes representing areas of the ocean in need of conservation.

You’ll see a floating kelp ‘forest’, bright pink coral and the deep sea featuring a 5 metre long whale that blows bubbles, giant clusters of jellyfish and 200 illuminated vampire squid.

What's more, it's all been made using recycled and reusable materials including repurposed fishing nets, used bubble wrap and recycled plastic bottles. Find out more about the Carnaby Christmas lights.

Christmas carolling

Are you a singer or a listener?

Some of the best carol concerts can be found at the Royal Albert Hall, St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. Special carols by candlelight performances will get you into the spirit of Christmas in no time. Find more carol concerts in London.

Enjoy this magical season and have a very merry Christmas. And remember, if you need to get to London in style, travel with megabus (and make mega savings too).
